| Designation: | AGS |
| Depositor: | Barranco |
| Organism: | Homo sapiens (human) |
| Ethnicity: | Caucasian |
| Age/Stage: | 54 years |
| Gender: | female |
| Tissue: | stomach |
| Morphology: | epithelial |
| Celltype: | gastric adenocarcinoma |
| Growth Properties: | monolayer |
| Description: | The AGS cell line was derived from fragments of a biopsy specimen of an untreated human adenocarcinoma of the stomach. This cell line may release Parainfluenzavirus Type 5 (formerly known as Simian Virus 5). The virus interferes with Interferon-signalling within the cell line by degradation of STAT1. |
| Culture Medium: | DMEM supplemented with 2 mM L-glutamine and 10% fetal bovine serum. |
| Subculturing: | Remove medium and rinse monolayer with 0.02% EDTA solution. Add fresh 0.025% trypsin/0.020% EDTA solution and let the culture incubate at 37°C until the cells detach. Add fresh medium, remove trypsin by centrifugation and dispense into new flasks. |
| Split Ratio: | A ratio of 1:2 to 1:6 is recommended |
| Doubling Time: | 20 hrs |
| Freeze Medium: | CM-1 (CLS Cell Lines Service) |
| Sterility: | Tests for mycoplasma (DAPI), bacteria and fungi were negative |
| Biosafety Level: | 2 |
| Tumorigenic: | yes, in athymic BALB/c mice |
| Karyotype: | modal number = 47; range = 39 to 92 |
